San Diego police investigating pair of robberies in Clairemont, Kearny Mesa – The San Diego Union-Tribune

Employees at two San Diego businesses were robbed at gunpoint Tuesday night, and detectives were trying to determine if the similar heists were related, police said.

The first robbery occurred about 9:20 p.m. at the USA Gasoline Food Mart on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in the Clairemont Town Square, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said.

Two men brandishing handguns entered the store, demanded cash from the register and took off with an undisclosed amount of money, Buttle said.

Twenty minutes later, and about a six-mile drive from the gas station, Buttle said a pair of gunmen in dark clothes entered another business on Aero Drive near Sandrock Road in the Kearny Mesa area, just south of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport — better known as Montgomery Field.

The men demanded cash and made off with an undisclosed sum, Buttle said, adding that the two robberies “sounded a lot alike” and descriptions of the robbers at both locations appeared to match.

Detectives from the robbery unit are investigating and will determine for certain if the heists were related, Buttle said.
